Buzz Bus | Tour One | Recap

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Last October I held my biggest Spa Buzz full day event to date at the Grand Wailea in Maui, Hawaii. (For the past 7 years, The Spa Buzz has gathered spa industry leaders regionally with the intention of building a strong community). My fourth year in Hawaii proved to capture a good majority of the island spas – and all I can surmise is the consistency of showing up year after year and the sheer persistence made it a success.

Therefore, I suspect you can imagine my shock – (planning all set – good numbers, great vendors, fantastic RSVP’s, an enviable venue, etc) when I found myself in a tropical, dreamy destination on the verge of a full-blown projectile emotional outburst. A few seconds into Eminem’s song, Lose Yourself on a treadmill in the swank hotel gym and I was completely overwhelmed. After what must have been the 112th time listening to the song, the lyrics shook me to my core and I am a little embarrassed to admit — a rapper from Detroit made me get misty eyed.

One thing I know for sure… it is nearly impossible to cry and run at the same time. If the whole cardiovascular effort isn’t taxing enough, the gasping for breath that follows being on the brink of tears could take the toughest human down. I had to get out as fast as possible as the words seemed to taunt me. “You only get once shot, do not miss your chance… this opportunity comes once in a lifetime”.

It seemed I had uniquely positioned myself — single, no kids, a little sense, a little less wisdom, stubborn, enthusiastic, full of hope, purpose and the most essential ingredient – blind faith.

I had made a dent into the spa industry. I had created something valuable and worthy by finding a way for professionals to connect. I was beginning to get the feeling I that I had an incredible opportunity to take the premise of spa and wellness a bit further… to take the message to an audience of non-believers or “on verge of believers”. The early thoughts of Summer now took on a new meaning in the Fall… the road trip simply had to happen to share the unique perspective I have learned from spa and wellness professionals. I had to dive in and not look back.

I now sit on a plane on my way to what will be an even bigger Spa Buzz event in NYC at SpaFinder’s Park avenue offices having wrapped up Tour 1 of the Buzz Bus Tour. I am looking at the RSVP’s – Good Morning America – Martha Stewart Radio – Prevention Magazine – Wall Street Journal – O magazine – The Food Network – OH MY GOODNESS!!! My life is filled with infinite – beyond infinite possibility. Pardon my language, but how the hell did I find myself amongst this crowd???

The idea for a road tour sprung from the desire to share the resources, which contribute to well-being. I obsessed, pondered and thought incessantly how I could make it happen. Soon thought progressed to talk and I was convinced this could not be idle conversation. The overwhelming feeling came from the fact that this absolutely had to happen, in fact, I assured myself I would be a fraud if it did not. I based this all upon one of my favorite sayings of all time from my friend Max. “It simply would be rude not to” (so maybe he usually said this after an offering of beer or a meal, but I took it to heart for what I found to be a profound, relevant, vital idea. So there it was — I convinced myself it would be impolite not to set about making this face-to-face wellness awareness campaign happen.

Thinking about those moments last Fall and now having wrapped up tour one of the Buzz Bus Tour… I wonder how did I find myself towing 42 + feet of vehicle? How did I find myself at a picker’s circle in Luckenbach, TX? How did I find myself at the oasis that is Lake Austin Resort and Spa? How did I find myself surrounded by a stellar and uniquely talented team? How did I find myself among such generosity and kindness. And most of all… How did I find myself privy to such a chance to express my purpose?

Joined by Catterina Calderon on the trip from Denver down to Texas – this work in progress got much more clarity and thanks to the quick wit of Samantha Silver and Vanessa Notman we spent a good majority of productive time at the an Austin, Texas pinnacle of health and fitness scene… under the bridge near Zilker park and the Nature Preserve on the Lady Bird Trail.

During tour one we handed out peanut butter, sunscreen, socially responsible tea. We shared samples of good belly touting the benefits of probiotics and Mila (thanks Lisa and Holli for serving), the healthiest food on the planet and loosened up a few hips with a good dose of hoola hooping. We even attempted rolling ourselves down the Zilker park hills in a gigantic ball.

We found ourselves in the center of the universe, among a multitude of roosters in Luckenbach, Texas with Jimmy Lee Jones – laughing out loud to the wit and sass of the lovely, Rosemary Estenson in Fredericksburg, Texas – hiking on Enchanted Rock with Rianna Riego, spending time with Darlene Fiske as she toured us through the jaw dropping tranquility and calm of Lake Austin Resort and Spa – Meeting with the entrepreneurial firecracker Rosilyn Raeburn, of Smackages – enjoying time with uber passionate Carol Robinson of the award winning U boutique and Med Spa in Plano, Texas and tormenting Marianne Lynn, Founder of Texas Spa and Salon Month’s neighborhood association in Dallas, Texas.

Overall a superbly resounding success full of ideas and potential to have more impact on the communities and people we encounter on the road. Watch out New Orleans, Louisiana!! Here we come.

I have a confession.

I used to be judgmental.  I used to have a bad attitude.  I used to think I was above a life of RV travel.

That is until… June 2010.
My first journey into the last of the remnants of Spring in the uppermost NW region of the U.S of A — to the great frontier of Alaska.

It was 2am, almost mid-June when I arrived in Coopers Landing, AK.  (Mind you after hellacious trip from New York, with an extended layover in Denver, on the runway in a non-reclining seat.  Oh… and don’t even make me start on the rigors of the recently past events in Chicago and NYC.  I have proof. I am NOT exaggerating. *I begin to wonder why I am always pushing myself and thinking coast to coast travel is efficient… after two events. Anyway, back to it.  Santa Claus has never carried as much as me. Even he has a sleigh and a team.  (Josee, keep the blue bag!!!  Paul… oh I am sorry to ever suggest a switch!)

I subconsciously must have left the monster-ous blue bag for a reason)  On the extended of all flights…I am antsy, I don’t like being trapped – or contained in any way, shape or form.  It is time to try and get some sleep for the most extended day.

Finally. Landed and at my destination.  I have 2 choices. Would I like to sleep on the ground in FREEZING, Artic-like temperatures?  Or
would I like to sleep in the cozy, upper deck of the Fisher family’s swank RV?

Easy choice.                                                                  The warm, glorious, posh RV!!!

Cue back to the formations of my judgment…I am away from the multi-million dollar Florida condos, homes and compounds where I initially formed such an “unaware” sensibility.  Hmmm.. or…lack thereof.

The RV it most certainly is.

I crawl inside in the dark.
It is warm.  It is cozy.  I instantly fall asleep.

When I awake, I am an immediate, absolute convert.  I am a person of instantaneous, immediate change.

Fast Forward.

Two months later.

Biking home, in the thick of Summer, from my gym, Qi Denver, on an innocuous Sunday.  (OK. My thoughts may stem from utter delirium of Kinesis Class).

I see it.  A sparking, shiny, lovely AIRSTREAM — on the residential streets — in the city of Denver.

Instantly, the sighting becomes a complete obsession.  I cannot help but ponder taking comfort (in the form of a home) on the road.  Who can take THIS away from me?  Sub-prime mortgages, over-extending on the American dream, corporate America, the loyalty of being with a “company” and the accolade of service of an inscribed silver/gold/platinum watch – or the equivalent—only now to be thrown away on a whim of volatility of markets, and best corporate interests.

The (as much as I HATE to refer to it.  THE most recent ECONOMY) has changed the way I view everything  This has changed me and is now just as much a part of my life as the dot.com burst.

What it means to be responsible, what it means to follow society’s predictable construct of being an adult, of progressing, of hitting the tiers of robot-like success.

Oh…  here is – the  Ah-ha!!! moment (love her or not, it is the, Oprah-esque quantification of being
fully, totally aware of an exact moment when everything changes.)

I am thinking, I am fretting, I am wondering about my purpose, my relevance in the world.  Hey… wasn’t I just trying to be healthy and fit – On a Sunday, on a day of rest, no less??????

It IS Sunday, after all.   It is SUPPOSED to be a time of rest. Of relaxation? Of rejuvenation?

I am anxious.

I work in the spa industry for GOD’s sakes.  Shouldn’t my heart rate and blood pressure be ultra low?  Again, I ask myself… Don’t I work in the spa industry?  Don’t I HAVE ALL the ANSWERS??  Don’t I lounge around all day?  (inside joke to ALL those who have ever worked in spa operations!)  Don’t I get services? Chill out?  Lead a life of luxury?

(Oh my industry friends- are you laughing, crying just a little? raising your fists to the injustice of it all??)

Isn’t that it???

That—-
is the gosh darn problem!!!!!!!!

How the hell can the message of spa translate to the everyday person?  Every person, of every income bracket?  Every religious belief?  Every political status?  Every sexual preference? Every level of education???  Every person’s intrinsic belief about what can be achievable for them?   Everyone’s ability to achieve balance?

Enter the consideration. The possibility.

Spa IS a lifestyle.

Spa IS a LIFESTYLE.

TAKE IT ON THE ROAD.

SHARE THE MESSAGE.

HAVE A VERY REAL, VERY TANGIBLE PURPOSE.

Share the purpose, show the purpose.  Make it REAL.

I must be the one to take it on the road.

THERE IS A WAY.
THERE IS A WAY, INDEED.

So it is.

I begin to make phone calls to my inner circle.

The people, (my people)- who won’t laugh.  My people who tell me their real opinion despite “feelings” – they tell me their truth.
I talk to the people who say, “Kristi. It just isn’t cute anymore”.
(Fortunately – this isn’t the case for this idea!)

The people who will love me despite my perpetual need to come up with something else, something different, something
that NO ONE has the guts to do.  This has never been done before as a collaborative effort, there is no R.O.I., there in no benchmark, there is no precedent.

It is time.  The stars are in absolute alignment.  It is time to share a message.  Spa is not only
luxury.  It is a lifestyle – it is what the people need. The American people need at least.  These are my people too.  With sky rocketing obesity rates, illness: diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, inconsolable stress levels — we
as a society have to find healing.  Damn it, it IS going on the road.  I am taking
the message on the road.  I am going to unequivocally change perceptions.  Give permission.  Provide access.  Everyone deserves wellness.  Deserves spa.  Deserves the tools, the resources to deal with stress and find balance.

ENTER.

Who knows ultimately what may come. I am giving it my all. The Spa Buzz is taking the risk.  It cannot be done alone.

WE are going on the road.  Won’t you join us?

Naturopathica Starter Kit Normal/Dry Skin Review By Radha Crawley, LMT, Ayurveda Educator

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

This kit contains:

  • Chamomile Cleansing Milk (1 oz) EcoCert*
  • Oat Facial Polish (.5 oz)
  • Rose Geranium Soothing Mist (1 oz) EcoCert*
  • Beech Tree & Ginseng Daily Moisturizer (1 oz) EcoCert*

*ECOCERT (source: Organic Spa Magazine) www.ecocert.com

Certification Type: Natural and Natural/ Organic

EcoCert requires a minimum of 95 percent natural origin as a baseline entry and a minimum of 5 percent organic content for the “Natural” standard, and a minimum of 10 percent organic content for the “Natural / Organic” standard. Up to 5 percent of ingredients can be synthetic. Limited synthetic preservatives are allowed. Water can be included in its calculation of organic content. Country of Origin: France Business Type: Profit

This kit contains four products to cleanse, exfoliate, fortify and nourish.  The Chamomile Cleansing Milk is soft and like the title suggests, milky.  The aroma is soft and slightly sweet, like chamomile and rose.  This cleanser is very gentle and leaves the skin soft and dewy.  I read the ingredients on the insert, which is a very long list, and wondered about the purity of some of them. As the EcoCert description states, the manufacturer can use up to 5% synthetic ingredients. The label from this product states that 98.99% of ingredients are from natural origin.

There are many beneficial botanicals in the products, which I can commend.  Naturopathica has a full ingredient glossary on their website, so you can read about each. I would also recommend doing your own research on any questionable additives, perhaps: Coco-Gluocoside, Glyceryl Oleate, Sucrose Cocoate, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Lauryl Gluoside, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate, Dehdroacetic Acid.

The Oat Facial Scrub is not EcoCert.  This is very similar in consistency to the Chamomile Cleansing Milk, but thicker.   There are beads of jojoba for a very mild exfoliation. Personally, my skin “builds up” faster and I prefer a stronger exfoliant 2-3 times per week.   The Oat and Facial Scrub you could use daily.

I quickly became fond of the scent of the Rose Geranium Soothing Mist.  The aromatherapy blend is delightful to the senses, calming and balancing.  It contains: Aloe, Rose Geranium Flower Water, Rose Geranium and Ylang Ylang essential oil, and then, in my opinion, some less desirable dispersants and stabilizers: Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Anisate, Sodium Levulinate. 100% of ingredients are from natural origin.

The Beech Tree and Ginseng Daily Moisturizer is light and fast absorbing.

You can find these products in spas around the country.

Looking for a refreshing and cooling Summer treatment for your Spa or home?

Here it is! Coconut Lime Refreshing Body Treatment from WoodSprite Organics

SGCLLG

This treatment uses Coconut Lime Sugar Polish which has Virgin Coconut oil that’s smell will bring you straight to the tropics, mixed with rich Mango Butter, perfect for your sun-parched skin and Cold Pressed key Lime essential oil to balance your temperature and your mood.   Immediately upon opening this jar I was drooling. It literally smells like you should be eating it! I have never been a fan of sugar scrubs before this one.  I loved the way the finer crystal sugar slowly dissolves as you are exfoliating your skin feeling less abrasive and more nuturing.  In Ayurveda summer is the season of fire (pitta) and so care needs to be taken to cool and calm the body mind.  It is said that Coconut oil is the best oil to cool and nourish the mind, body and spirit in the summer and one should use this oil daily for self-massage or Abhyanga.   Using this sugar polish in the shower at home or vichy in the spa, is a great way to refresh your mind and cool your body for the heat of the summer!

Look at the pure ingredients:  *Organic Raw Sugar, *Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, *Organic Sunflower Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Mango Butter, Key Lime Peel Pure Essential Oil and Vitamin E. (*Certified Organic) Vegan.

The entire protocol also includes a hydrotherapy portion using Coconut Lime Milk Bath or Coconut Fizzing Bath Bomb, rehydration and a wrap using Coconut Lime Whipped Organic Coconut Body Butter, Divine!

Purity and Sensual Pleasure found in the Organic Body and Massage Oils by WoodSprite Organic Body

Friday, June 4th, 2010

I am a massage therapist and so when I come across a good oil, I am pleased.  Well folks, I am pleased!  It is so important to nourish our clients and our own skin with oils that are of the highest purity. Massage Oil does more than just moisturize our skin. It allows for a gentle detoxification of the body by absorbing into the blood stream and dislodging toxins so they can be eliminated from the body.  The oils aid in digestion, they protect our skin from the elements, and they provide snehana, a Sanskrit word for oil therapy or LOVE therapy. Oil is a form of love, true pure love.  Choosing a pure and organic oil to give a massage is like choosing a golden carriage to carry a loved one.

The WoodSprite Organic Oils are a collection of pure and light nut and fruit oils that are easy for the skin to absorb with a smooth glide for massage and bodywork.

The Lavender Organic Body and Massage Oil is the perfect match for easing stress, anxiety and quieting the mind after a long day.  The Organic Lavender essential oil is full of juicy, flowery middle notes.

Try the Grapefruit Mint Oil for a refreshing and uplifting massage after your morning shower or as a detoxifying and analgesic massage oil choice in the spa. The first time I tried this oil I was pleasantly surprised by the coolness imparted to my skin by the peppermint oil, just enough to lend a gentle alertness.

The Ginger Glow Botanical Oil is perfect for enhancing circulation in the skin and muscles, perfect anytime of year and especially in the fall and winter seasons. Ginger Glow has essential oils of Bergamot, Organic Lavender, Ginger, Clove, Allspice, Lime, Grapefruit, Chamomile ,Ylang Ylang and Cassia. YUM! A very balanced blend.

Ahhhhh, The Sacred Collection. These oils have 100% organic base oils of sesame, sunflower, sweet almond and macadamia nut.  These oils are of medium weight and are filled with sacred resins and essential oils to enhance spiritual and emotional health.  The blends come in scents beautifully named Zen, Bliss and Spirit.  Perfect for all purists searching for inner peace. I would recommend using these oils along with energy work, marma therapy, head massage, lomi lomi, and any bodywork that offers a spiritual side.

These oils all come in retail and professional sizes for back bar at the spa and wellness clinic.
